Sakat Chauth falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Magha month. It is also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, Tilkut Chauth or Maghi Chauth.
Popular Mythological Story (Potter and Old Mother): In ancient times, a potter lived in a city. His pots always remained raw in the kiln. On the priest’s advice, the king ordered that sacrificing a child would solve the problem.
One by one, children were sacrificed. Finally, an old mother’s only son was brought. That day was Sakat Chauth. The old mother was a devotee of Sakat Mata. She gave her son betel nut and durva grass as offerings to Sakat Mata and placed him in the kiln.
By the grace of Sakat Mata, the boy came out alive and safe, while all the pots were perfectly baked. Everyone praised Sakat Mata’s glory. Since then, this fast is observed for child protection.
Another Popular Story (Sister-in-Law Tale): In a city, the younger sister-in-law was poor and the elder was rich. The younger one was a devotee of Ganesha and observed Sakat Chauth. Once she made tilkut (sesame-jaggery sweets) and performed puja.
The elder sister-in-law mocked her, but due to the younger’s devotion, prosperity came to the house. The elder also gained faith and started keeping the fast.
Sakat Chauth Puja Vidhi & Rules
- Take bath in the morning and take sankalp (vow).
- In the evening, install Lord Ganesha’s idol.
- Offer sesame-jaggery laddoos, durva grass, fruits.
- Read or listen to the vrat katha.
- Offer arghya to the moon on sighting (moonrise around 8:54 PM).
- Break the fast with tilkut prasad.
Keep nirjala fast, but if health doesn’t permit, fruit diet is allowed.
